Yet where Mexico narrows at its border with Guatemala, the Yucat
n curves north and, geographically, the entire peninsula is
actually farther north than Acapulco. The cities of Canc£n and
M‚rida are at more northern latitudes than Mexico City, and
Miami is a mere 684 miles (1,102 km) away. So why
is the Yucat n considered so remote? Well, like many regions
around the world, its development (or lack thereof) can be
traced to its geography. It has been - and in many ways, still
is - not easily accessible by land. Thick jungles and high
mountains in Chiapas, the southernmost state in Mexico, and
swampy lowlands in neighboring Tabasco always limited overland
routes. Decent roads into the area were not built until as late
as the 1970s. Before that, most commerce and travel was by ship
and then later by air. Much of what the Spanish conquistadors
found physically on the peninsula in the 1500s you can still
find there today. (Sorry, but as they found out the hard way,
there's no gold - unless you count the jewelry worn by the
guests at Canc£n's expensive resorts.)
